Daunia Mine EIS

In 2008, MTV Principal Michael Vincent was part of a small team employed at BHP Billiton that successfully delivered an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Daunia Mine. This comprehensive EIS included environmental baseline studies in relation to terrestrial ecology, water, groundwater, soils, community, noise and dust, and traffic.

MTV Principal Michael Vincent, supervised fieldwork for the baseline studies on behalf of BHP Billiton. The impact assessment chapters and technical reports for the EIS were outsourced and Michael maintained quality control processes with the external consultant to ensure service delivery.

Michael is an effective negotiator and he liaised with a range of relevant State and Federal Government agencies to obtain approval for the EIS with just six Coordinator General conditions issued as part of the approval. The Environmental Authority was granted within 21 months of the project’s Initial Advice Statement, which was a considerable achievement given most EIS approval processes take approximately 2-4 years to complete.

Michael supported the Daunia Mine to obtain approvals under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 to enable the clearance of endangered Brigalow communities. He also developed successful applications for a Vegetation Offset from the Federal and State governments for activities by the mine at a nearby nature refuge.

The Daunia Mine has subsequently been constructed and as of 2013 has been producing coal.
